Fly Fishing
Besides sea fishing, one of my other great loves is fly fishing for a variety of species. I tie my own flies and have found that many of them are deadly. I also have materials and tool kits for equipping up to 20 people at a time. This means that I can operate fly tying sessions for individuals or groups, giving them a great taster of what it is all about. I also produce high quality resources, e.g. I produced all the artwork for the eleven books that I have had published to date and am currently working on a range of videos to post on the internet for people to refer to later. (Many of my ideas are explored in my latest books 'Fly Fishing - the Tug on the Line' and 'Make Fishing Fun - Tips, Trips, Techniques and Tackle'.)
There are plenty of trout fishing opportunities in the South West, whether it be fishing for wild brownies or tackling stockies in the local stillwaters or reservoirs such as Kennick. It all depends on whatever takes your fancy. If you would simply like some help with casting, perhaps trying it for the first time, or maybe getting a little further, it would be my pleasure to help.
NB: Fish permits are not included within my fee and you will need to have a valid Environment Agency licence.
One of my all time favourite forms of fishing is the pursuit of carp upon the fly. This is an area in which I have had considerable experience and a great deal of success, one of my best single sessions to date producing twenty four carp, including eight ghosties. Many of these were into double figures and gave a cracking acccount of themselves on the tackle that I like to use.
If you haven't yet tried fly fishing for carp, then a guided session after them might be an experience that you will never forget - albeit hopefully for the right reasons! Various writers have described them as the British equivalent of bonefish and I don't think that they are far wrong! Certainly the first few that I had came as a bit of a wake up call, with some of the carp motoring the length of the lake and fighting like tigers all the way to the net. It can be a great deal of fun and something that I would recommend all people passionate about fly fishing should try for themselves.
As an avid camper, I can also put you in contact with some of the camping and touring sites that have gone to great trouble to provide excellent fishing on site. Just give me a call, especially if you are wanting to come down to the South West for a holiday!
Tenkara is an ultralight - officially 0 weight - traditional Japanese technique for trout from small streams.
